Course Learning Goals/Outcomes:
This course, offered to freshman students, intends to address important topics in Biology. Upon enrollment in Honors Biology, it is assumed that all students come to class with some prior knowledge of the course topics. We will be studying the unity that underlies the diversity of life. We will be investigating the patterns of life including the flow of energy through organisms and communities; DNA information and how it is used in the design of life’s machinery; the process of maintaining homeostasis between cells, organisms and communities; how cells diversify into communities of cells; and how DNA information flows across generations to be selected for use by organisms in populations.
This class will involve hands-on laboratory work, discussion, projects, and lecturing on various topics. Students will be working as individuals and in groups and will be discussing the dynamics of working in each way. Practice in both types of personal work modes are equally important to anyone who wishes to work after leaving school. Homework will be assigned on a regular basis.
Special attention will be spent on learning skills in analysis, problem-solving, technology and awareness of global problems. We will attempt to find ways of incorporating the personal and social talents of students into the work that we do in class. Hopefully this will provide the backdrop for a positive, challenging experience for both the students and myself as we move through the school year.
